Issued under an existing indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract dating back to 2019, the delivery order was managed by the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The Air Force immediately obligated about $35 million in fiscal 2026 aircraft procurement funds at the time of the August 2026 award.

The physical work will happen primarily at Boeing's facility in San Antonio, Texas, with an expected completion deadline of December 20, 2028.

Why the B-52 Radar and Rack Overhaul is Long Overdue

If you look at the cockpit of a legacy B-52H, you are looking at technology designed when vacuum tubes were still common and digital processing was in its infancy. The existing mechanically scanned radar is past its prime.

To fix this, the Air Force is integrating the AN/APQ-188 active electronically scanned array radar across the entire fleet of 76 operational bombers. Boeing already delivered the first flight-test aircraft equipped with the new APQ-188 radar to the 412th Test Wing at Edwards Air Force Base for rigorous flight testing.

Juggling Multiple Massive Upgrades

This bomb rack order is just one slice of a massive pie. The B-52 fleet is undergoing a simultaneous, historic double-transformation.

Along with the radar and bomb rack updates, the Air Force initiated the Commercial Engine Replacement Program. That project involves swapping out the old TF33 engines for new Rolls-Royce F130 turbofans, backed by a massive task order awarded to Boeing. While the engine swap spans facilities from Oklahoma City to Indianapolis with a completion target stretching into 2033, the electronics and rack updates are happening right now to ensure the aircraft can deploy modern precision-guided munitions effectively.

Defense analysts often point out that upgrading a vintage airframe comes with unique cost and schedule risks. Flight testing for the radar modernization faced pushback from initial timelines, forcing the Air Force to constantly manage expenses and refine technical requirements. Yet, keeping the Stratofortress operational remains far cheaper than designing and building a brand-new strategic bomber from scratch in large quantities.

For Boeing, securing steady defense cash flow through multi-year modernization programs provides a vital cushion while the company works through commercial aircraft production hurdles and labor negotiations. As long as global tensions demand a heavy conventional and nuclear standoff capability, the B-52 will remain a backbone of the U.S. deterrent force, and companies like Boeing will keep cashing checks to keep the heavy metal flying.
