For a currency to dominate global trade, it must offer three properties:

This is a complete misreading of commercial banking incentives.

Commercial banks profit from the friction of the legacy system. Foreign exchange spreads, wire fees, liquidity provision, and trade finance yields generate billions in revenue annually for institutions like HSBC, Standard Chartered, and JPMorgan.

Multi-CBDC platforms aim to disintermediate these exact middle layers.

Trillions of dollars move daily because banks do not pre-fund every trade; they settle the net difference at the end of the operating cycle. Netting reduces the actual liquidity required to run global trade by roughly 80% to 90%.

If you enforce real-time, atomic settlement across a multi-CBDC ledger, you force global trade participants to lock up vast amounts of capital just to back instant transactions.

Until central bankers understand that speed does not equal liquidity, their multi-billion-dollar digital currency platforms will do nothing more than process PR metrics.
