The horror unfolded at roughly 3:00 am on Sunday, August 16, 2026, between Junctions 3 and 4 on the northbound carriageway near Moone. A BMW was traveling southbound against the flow of heavy traffic, speeding down the wrong side of the motorway before slamming head-on into an oncoming Hyundai.

The impact was absolute wreckage. Initial reports pointed to four fatalities within the rogue vehicle, but emergency services recovering the site later confirmed a fifth body trapped inside the BMW. All five deceased individuals were young males.
Meanwhile, the second car held an innocent family on their way to Dublin Airport. Four family members sustained severe injuries. Three women—one in her twenties and two in their thirties—alongside a seven-year-old child who suffered a broken leg, were rushed to various hospitals including Tallaght Hospital, St Luke's Hospital in Kilkenny, and Children's Health Ireland. Medical staff list the front-seat passengers in critical condition.
